12-Month Professional Development Program
The Math Recovery Specialist professional development program includes two weeks of course work, three additional individual on-site coaching sessions, and three facilitated collegial team meetings. The program includes a detailed understanding of the Learning Framework in Number and the Instructional Framework in Early Number. It incorporates a powerful staff development model that builds communities of practice for teachers, leader/trainers and coaching teams.
Program Overview
- Initial 10-day course divided into two 5-day sessions.
- Assessment for identification of the lowest-attainers at the first-grade level, with application for students in grades K – 3.
- A Framework for intensive, individualized teaching of these students in order to advance them to a level at which they are likely to learn successfully in a regular class-room setting.
- Math Recovery students undergo a teaching cycle of 10 to 15 weeks duration. In these teaching cycles, students are taught one-on-one for 30 minutes daily, four or five days per week.
- Teaching up to four students daily in a half-day setting. Over the course of the school year a full-time Math Recovery Specialist would be expected to teach ten to twelve of the lowest-attaining first-graders in the school.
- At least three meetings across the school year with other Math Recovery teachers
- At least three one-on-one coaching sessions with Math Recovery Leader
- The program must be supported by the district with a written commitment to support all staff development time, one-on-one teaching time, and planning time.
Requirements
Math Recovery Teacher candidates successfully completing the professional development program will receive Math Recovery Specialist Teacher Course Completion Certificate issued by Southern Cross University, Australia. Successful completion includes the initial 60-hour training, attendance and participation in all continuing contact sessions, a minimum of 100 hours of one-on-one videotaped instruction, assessment and case study projects, and Leader recommendation.
Teachers holding this certificate may then participate in Math Recovery Leader Training which enables in-district training of Math Recovery teachers at a significantly reduced cost. This approach is designed to support long term sustainability of the program and build in-district self-sufficiency.
Cost
The cost of the program is $4400 + the cost of the teacher kit ($1100) with scalable discounts for additional participants.
