Math Recovery Intervention Specialist Professional Development Course
What is the Intervention Specialist Professional Development Course?
The Math Recovery Intervention Specialist Program provides intensive intervention and develops teacher expertise with a detailed study of the Learning Framework in Number and the Instructional Framework in Early Number. As a result of completing this course, teachers become certified Math Recovery Intervention Specialists with new tools for assessment and instruction in early numeracy. While the program primarily addresses 1st grade intervention, teachers throughout the world apply the knowledge and strategies of Math Recovery Intervention to students of all grades. Math Recovery Intervention is taught in 40-60 lesson cycles in a one-on-one, videotaped setting, and students move from being the lowest in their class to achieving with the average or above average within their class.
How Does It Work?
The Math Recovery Intervention Specialist program takes place of over the course of a year. Among the key components of this training are:
- Receipt of a Math Recovery Intervention Specialist kit including teaching materials and texts
- Five days of initial professional development that prepare the teacher to administer and analyze Math Recovery assessments, as well as identify and select students for Math Recovery intervention
- Five days of additional professional development that prepare the teacher to provide Math Recovery intervention
- A framework for intensive, individualized teaching to help advance low attaining students so they are likely to be successful learners in a regular classroom environment.
- Support throughout the year involving:
- A minimum of three on-site one-on-one coaching sessions with a Math Recovery Leader
- A minimum of three facilitated collegial team meetings
Teachers are required to complete 100 hours of one-on-one videotaped Math Recovery teaching over the course of the year as well as submit two projects that include written and video documentation with written reflections of both student and professional growth. Teachers are expected to participate in all professional development and on-going support. At the close of the year of professional development, the supporting Math Recovery Leader will approve or deny Math Recovery Specialist Certification. A teacher has two years to complete all requirements and be recommended for certification. The Math Recovery Intervention Specialist is by far the most intensive program and requires the most resources, but in turn has dramatic, positive impact on the knowledge and lives of students and teachers.
Prior to starting the program, the district administration must provide a written commitment to support all staff development time, one-on-one assessment and teaching time, and planning time.
Those who complete this program also have the option to continue their training and become Math Recovery Leaders, Add+VantageMR Champions, and/or SNAP Facilitators. This enables in-district training of Math Recovery professional development courses at a significantly reduced cost as part of the approach designed to support long-term sustainability of the programs and build in-district self-sufficiency.
