SNAP: Student Numeracy Assessment Progressions

SNAP Information

SNAP is a two-day professional development program that provides classroom teachers with an individual assessment tool. The Program aims to facilitate teacher assessment of individual development in early numeracy, which allows for greater differentiation of instruction in order to meet the range of development of all students in the classroom.  SNAP allows teachers to develop Classroom Profiles that provide a visual summary of the range of development in the classroom for any aspect covered in the assessment.

Each training participant receives an assessment kit that includes the materials necessary to conduct the assessment. Teaching exemplars, assessment tasks and materials, follow-up assessment and ideas are components of this program. A primary feature of the materials is the SNAP folder, which provides a means to document each individual student's growth in numeracy that is easily accessible for parent conferences and teacher planning.

District support for continued follow-up is recommended.

This program draws from Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 year-olds by Wright, Stanger, Stafford, and Martland (2006).
